Thanksgiving this year was spent in Delaware where my aunt hosted at her home. Originally, my family and I were supposed to gather last year for the holiday, but due to the COVID surge (at the time), we all thought it would be best to postpone until this year. As always my sister and I drive to Delaware and this trip was no different …kinda. The 2.5 hour drive turned into over three hours due to expected holiday traffic. My mom, sisters, and I hit the road the day before Thanksgiving so it was nothing we could really do. Though the drive was somewhat annoying, it felt good once we arrived to greet our family who we hadn’t seen for a few months. Once we unloaded the car, I barely rested and started diving into prepping our meal. I wanted Thanksgiving to be stress free and to flow with ease and that it did. That night, I cleaned and made the greens and cornbread and left everything else for the next day. Being that there was more than one hand on deck to cook, I didn’t have to overdue it the night before. I was able to capture some of the journey and cooking process, but it was kinda hard with all that was going on. Overall, my Thanksgiving was beautiful and was all that I could hope for, and is the reason I’m so grateful. The holiday was all about family and being grateful for all that we have including each other. Oh and can’t forget some good old food that will probably last a few days lol.
Our Thanksgiving dinner spread was a mix of our cultural Haitian dishes along with some of the classic soul food staples. There was fried turkey and goat, salmon, stuffing, chicken pasta salad, baked macaroni and cheese, collard greens, candied yams, pink potato salad (beets makes it pink), black mushroom rice, and cornbread. For dessert (not photographed) we had apple and sweet potato pies.
I kinda did a poor job at capturing photos of everyone and of course a family photo. We were so consumed with eating because we were all hungry that we forgot to take one, but we’ll get kit right next year or on another holiday lol.
I just couldn’t help myself. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving with my family.
